REMIXED VIERNES: APT ONE

Friday, August 29th, 2008

DJ Apt One hails from the landmark east coast city of Pittsburgh. The home of Andy Warhol, Primanti Brothers Sandwiches and Blue Collar Drunks. He’s one half of the DJ/Production duo, Philadelphyinz, along with Skinny Friedman.

The two started collaborating on music in Pittsburgh, where they both grew up. Their moniker is a nod to Pennsylvania’s two biggest cities. “Pittsburgh people are really serious about their Pittsburgh,” says Apt One. “You can take the yinzer out of Pittsburgh, but you can’t take Pittsburgh out of the yinzer.”

“We do best by walking the line between being DJs who play what people want to hear, and doing more creative stuff and trying to take people places. We try to go all out in learning about a lot of genres that aren’t mainstream, but can be incorporated into our set.”

HIP HOP TWOSDAYS (A DAY LATE)

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Day late and a dollar short with the posting but it’s well worth the wait. Following up on my REWIND THAT BACK mix on the previous post here’s some more hip hop for that ass, this time a tidbit more underground.

Actually I just recently discovered these two neck nodders they were so undergound. No bones about it this is hip hop at its purest boom bappedist level. Just raw 88 bpm beats and a couple MC’s slinging verbals in your mouth.

THE NONCE – MIX TAPES

The Nonce were pretty much The Cool Kids but a decade earlier. They were a duo from here in L.A. that were active in the 1990s. As part of the Project Blowed collective, working withAceyalone, amongst others, they developed a reputation for smooth, jazzy, classy production, complimented by laid-back, smart rhymes (paying homage to the Old School Rappers they grew up off of in the mid-80′s).

EAST FLATBUSH PROJECT – TRIED BY 12″

East Flatbush Project is actually just one dude. Spencer “4 Hire” Bellamy. Here’s how he got things rolling…”Well I started out as a dj at the age of 9..at 11 I met legendary producer Howie Tee (Special Ed/Chubb Rock) who was also a dj at the time and I became a member of his crew Count Disco out of East Flatbush. I continued to spin up until 17… at this time I was spinning with DJ Dice(Das Efx) and DJ Scratchator (Busta Rhymes)… I didn’t have an interest in producing until I heard LL Cool J’s “Jack The Ripper.” I remember sitting on the floor in my living room staring at the radio saying “This is what I want to do.”

Annnddd…Here’s what he has to say about how “the project” came to be…”I had beats and I knew a few mc’s so I came up with the idea of using various mc’s on my beats and calling it The East Flatbush Project. In 96, I hooked up with an artist by the name of Des and we made “Tried By 12″ which became a classic.”

The dynamic duo of David Byrne & Brian Eno have come together for the first time in nearly 30 years (WTF?!) to bring us a spanking new album chock full o’ creative concoctions from two of the finest musical brains on earth. It’s called “Everything That Happens Will Happen Today” Nicely put.

Apparently, it was the brain child of a casual dinner conversation betwixt good friends. The album sounds incredible and is kicked off by this amazing first single…
