Hey now, so Sunday night I had the privilege of checking out a couple of dusty old school gems on the big screen back to back at the world famous Silent Movie Theater over on Fairfax Ave. The combo of Beat Street and Breakin’ along with the Arabian Prince, an original member of N.W.A., on the 1′s and 2′s had the crowd in a giddy nostalgic haze all night long.
Turbo’s solo broom dancing scene outside the Kwik-E-Mart in Breakin’ was worth the price of admission alone. There was cheesy 80′s “breaksploitation” in abundance and everyone was lapping it up. Fat laced pumas, gerri curls, raccoon tail headbands, lots of mesh and even a young Jean Claude Van Damnage buck whilin’ on Venice Beach in a one piece spandex leotard (NO JOKE!).
Here’s a couple of tracks that’ll help ya get a taste of what was cookin’ that night. Coincidentally, they both share the amazing title of “Love Rap”. Imagine that! First one’s by Harlem World Crew and the latter by the all star line up of Spoonie Gee & The Treacherous Three (who hold down a most amazing Santa Claus and his elves type scene in Beat Street).
