The mighty Grant Phabao, who’s all about “bring back the original King Tubby sound with a modern twist”, injects some perfect-for-a-Friday irie type vibes into N.A.S.A.’s “Money” Feat. David Byrne, Chuck D, Ras Congo, Seu Jorge & Z-Trip.

In doing so, the dub master successfully turns this big big choon into a laid back, smooth grooving 100% Reggae Jam.  Enjoi!

Head DFA’er, James Murhpy’s in town this week, so I figured it’s a good time to throw some LCD at ya.

Here’s a remix by the always stellar, forward thinking Curtis Vodka straight outta Alaska.  He grabs hold of the title track off the group’s instant classic album “Sound of Silver”, nuzzles it, nurtures it, then goes ahead and pours a bucket of shuffling synths all over it.

HIP HOP TWOSDAYS: GRAND PUBA

grandpuba

The Grand Pu! The leader of the Brand Nubian who broke off solo around ‘91 and was unfuckwittable for a good minute around ‘93-’94.  Here’s a couple of summer tinged solo joints from one of the best emcees to ever do it.

From hitting skinz to blessing beats, Puba was and is one of the illest and always does it with a smooth and laid back style.  He’s got a new album coming out in June called “Retroactive”.  With production and guest spots from Q-Tip and Large Professor, among others, this LP’s shaping up to be a heater for the boom box.

shoes

Oooh this is real nice.  A skanked out dub version of The Eagles’ 1980 jam “Those Shoes” boiled down to it’s bad ass core by the french guys in Rove Dogs.

What got me most was the vocoder action about 5 1/2 minutes in, well, along with the obvious “High Plains Drifter” sample source to open it up.  Snuggles up niceley to the BBQ’s this memorial day weekend.  Enjoy.

This ode to all the subwoofers & amps out there doing their best to rattle the streets and turn on the around the way girls kicked off LL’s classic 4th album back in 1990.  Blast it loud n’ proud.
