Our super homie, Ty Evans, is screening his insane new 3D skate film “Unbeleafable” at the Downtown Independent Theater tonight, Friday October 21 @ 7pm, as part of the International Skateboard Film Festival.
Ty will be on a panel discussion about 3D filmmaking and the night will feature 2 other 3D films (not to mention additional films showing on Saturday & Sunday). Come through and check it all out! Your brain will never be the same!
Final friendly reminder to everyone that the highly anticipated screening of the N.A.S.A. film, “The Spirit Of Apollo”, is going down this Friday, October 14th, at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York City. The event is being brought to you by After-Set as part of their Independent Film Program. Check-in time is at 7pm with the show starting @ 8pm sharp (our area will be by the hotel bar). Tickets will be sold downstairs at $10 a piece (10% of the proceeds will be going to the charity Healing The Children). Please RSVP to nate@squeakeclean.com ASAP to let us know you are coming!
N.A.S.A.: The Spirit of Apollo is an intimate, behind the scenes look at the making of N.A.S.A.’s (North America South America) landmark debut LP, The Spirit of Apollo. The film documents the fruition of the project’s central theme and focus: ignoring boundaries and bringing people together from completely different worlds in order to create unique and unexpected art.
As you may have heard, our fearless leader, Sam Spiegel, is serving as the co-music director (along with Nick Zinner) for what will certainly be a mind blowing “psycho-opera” spearheaded by close friend and front woman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O.
“Stop The Virgens” will premiere at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn tomorrow, October 12th, for 8 performances, concluding on October 22nd. It’s being produced by our good friends at The Creators Project and directed by the amazing Adam Rapp.
The opera will serve as a live version of the album that Sam wrote with Karen and a host of others a few years back. With big names such as Money Mark, the YYY’s drummer Brian Chase, and Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of the Greenhornes/Racanteours contributing to the music, sound design by Andres Velasquez, costumes by Christian Joy and acting by Lily Taylor, you just know this “original live experience” is going to be impressive on every single level.
Karen’s aim is to have this “feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis that will have all the good stuff of escapist entertainment with a few sucker punches to the gut along the way”. Read more about it in the NY Times right HERE and head on over to the St. Ann’s Warehouse site to scoop up your tickets to what will most definitely be a jaw dropping good time!

Also, as a special treat, before the N.A.S.A. film we will be screening a short directed by Marcus Slabine entitled The Devil Wears Clown Make-Up. The film is about a young man descending towards psychological madness after discovering a picture of a sad clown on the streets of New York City. Check out the IMDB page right HERE.
Great article in the NY Times today about the upcoming live experience that is Stop The Virgens. As previously reported, our own Sam Spiegel is the music director along with Nick Zinner from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Hey O! As you know, we here at Squeak E. Clean are always getting into really big things and it just so turns out that today we have some really big news to share with you. Our fearless leader, Sam Spiegel, is working on a “psycho-opera” spearheaded by his good friend and front woman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O. We can’t quite let the entire cat out of the bag just yet but let it be known that this show will be “an assault on the tragic joys of youth”.
“Stop The Virgens” will premiere at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn on October 12th for 8 performances, concluding on October 22nd. It’s being produced by our homies at The Creators Project and directed by the amazing Adam Rapp. The opera will serve as a live version of the songs from an album that Sam produced and wrote with Karen with Sam and Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner serving as musical directors.
Also contributing to the “original live experience” are musicians Money Mark, the YYY’s drummer Brian Chase, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler of the Greenhornes/Racanteours as well as sound design by Andres Velasquez. Rumor has it that the one, the only, indie film legend Lily Taylor will also be involved along with Karen’s right-hand fashion guru Christian Joy designing all of the costumes.
Karen’s aim is to have this “feel like a psychedelic ride laced with catharsis that will have all the good stuff of escapist entertainment with a few sucker punches to the gut along the way”. Well said. I’m sure we’ll all agree once we have the chance to take it all in. If you are anywhere near Brooklyn in October make sure and scoop yourself up a ticket b/c this is something you will not want to miss!
Beck’s has established a fund to financially support and showcase independent thinkers in the fields of art, fashion, music and design. To launch the fund on a global scale, they are commissioning 30 original projects from creators who share their spirit of independent thinking. These first 30 works will be the first commissions from the Beck’s Green Box Project; the world’s first augmented reality gallery.
Beck’s has selected Sam as one of their “key holders”. He’ll help select and curate future Green Boxes from a pool of submissions and be mentoring up and coming creative talent.
The first round of virtual art pieces, all by renowned artists, will pop up around the globe in cities like London, Miami, New York, Los Angeles, and Rome over the course of the summer. The art will exist within 3D canvases, The Green Boxes, around these five cities and will appear when users interact with the virtual pieces via smart phones and tablets. To view each piece, you’ll need to download The Green Box Project App. For more information on the Green Box Project, visit the Beck’s website HERE.
